Our Visit to Cuba
Welcome to the Cuba Webpage developed by Keri Cowan and Camilo Moreno . We have just recently returned from a trip to the beautiful city of Havana, Cuba. We stayed in Miramar, Cuba from May 29 to June 7. The trip was organized as an Economics and History course through West Virginia University. The group included 18 students and two professors. We had an amazing time during our short stay in one of the world's best kept secrets.
Cuba is a beautiful city with something to be discover behind every corner walked. The Cuban people are amazing. They were very friendly and anxious to learn more about us Americans and our way of life in the prohibited United States. The Cuban people enjoy simple lives; they love to dance and have fun. During our stay we met an unmearsurable number of wonderful people, both young and old. Many of these great people were those from the University of Havana. The University of Havana held morning class sessions for us, which were very interesting and informative. During our afternoons we would take field trips around the country. We visited the University of Havana, Old Havana, and the favorite of the group a sugar plantation in Cuba's country side, plus a few more. At night the group was free to explore the city of Havana. This is the time we took advantage of walking the streets and talking to the people of Cuba. Some of the highlights of the trip were visiting the Castillo de Morro, dancing salsa in the Cuban disco clubs, swimming at the Santa Maria Beach and watching a national volleyball game in the Cuban coliseum.
We group members shared a once in a lifetime experience in a country that many Americans have been unable to visit since the 1960's. This experience taught us alot about ourselves and both the advantages and disadvantages we posess as United States citizens. Freedom is a treasure that we must cherish, but we must also remember that life has so much more to offer us if we just look past a days work into the bigger picture. The professors of West Virginia University who gave us the opportunity to embark on this priceless adventure receive our warmest gratitude. Both were excellent mentors during our stay and enlightened us all about what Cuba and its people have to offer the world.
I hope that you will enjoy viewing the pictures provided in our webpage and we encourage you too take some time to learn more about Cuba and discover the country that we will remember for the rest of our lives.
